Abstract

The incident duration estimation model of wide area incident management support systems (WAIMSS) was validated based on an estimation tree calibrated using incident data collected at the Northern Virginia Traffic Control Center. The statistical analyses supported the WAIMSS estimation of incident duration distribution, mean and variance. The error analysis provided encouraging results based on the distribution of estimation errors and estimation error percentages. While WAIMSS duration estimation model was effective in dealing with incidents with more than one discriminating characteristic, only the most incident characteristic was used by the model and others were simply ignored.
