Twin-precipitate interaction in Ti-1wt%Cu

Abstract

The interaction between deformation twins and precipitates in Ti-lwt%Cu and also the effect of subsequent short term aging on the stability of precipitates in the twinned zone was studied. The alloy was thermomechanically processed to form a supersaturated α-Ti solid solution, and aged at various times and temperatures to produce a fine dispersion of either fully coherent or semi-coherent plate-like precipitates all lying on {101̄1}2 planes. The samples were deformed at high strain rates at liquid nitrogen temperatures to induce deformation twins. The passage of twins sheared the precipitates and also altered the habit plane of some of the variants. Irrespective of their habit plane orientation, all of the fully coherent precipitates in the twinned zone were observed to be stable, even upon subsequent short term aging. In contrast, short term aging caused the initially semicoherent precipitates in the twinned zone to disintegrate and form small spherical precipitates. Also investigated was the interaction between deformation twins and small transformed β particles within the α grains. When the size of the β particle was larger than the twin, the twin bypassed the particle by looping around it. Otherwise the twin forced the particle to deform.
