Tunneling evidence of strong cooper-pair-breaking near Tc in cuprate superconductors

Abstract

The superconductive tunneling density of states obtained from conventional metal film-insulator tunnel junctions on cleaved (ab) basal planes of single crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y (2212) reveals a rising pair breaking rate Γ(T) near Tc, as predicted by Lee and Read. We obtain Γ(T)=2.3 kTc(T/Tc)3, which confirms a recent calculation by Coffey and also recent tunneling results of Takada et al on YBa2Cu3O6. This implies a pair lifetime at Tc of about 40 fs in 2212. The results indicate that the T3 pairbreaking near Tc is an intrinsic feature of superconductivity in the cuprate planes.
