Transmission line filled with fast switched periodic plasma as a wideband frequency transformer

Abstract

The propagation of electromagnetic waves through rapidly created plasmas displays interesting phenomena such as frequency upshifting and spectral broadening. The time-domain wave-plasma interaction process leads to a permanent change of wave properties. It is used to convert waves into new ones that are not easily generated by present means. The cause of wave frequency shift is understood to be the result of a sudden change of the refractive index of the hosting medium, such as converting the background gas into a plasma suddenly. The wave frequency has to change in order to satisfy the new dispersion relation.
