Family members, including family of origin and family of choice, are essential components of the PWA's support system. Family support is important in all high-risk groups, including gay men, IVDUs, and HIV-positive mothers and children. Before family members can be supportive, fear of infection and homophobia must be addressed. As the primary care provider, the NP can mobilize the resources to support family members, including emotional support from professionals and peers, education, and respite care.
