Abstract

The transmission of Alfvén waves from Io to the Jovian ionosphere is discussed. Various simplified laws for the variation of plasma density are analyzed and juxtaposed to simulate a realistic density variation along the Io-Jupiter flux line. Apparently the ionosphere is previously only to frequencies in excess of 1 Hz. The ionosphere participates in tilting the flux tube trapped by Io leading to the formation of a neutral point in the vicinity of the satellite.
