    Abstract

The Avondster Project for an integrated maritime heritage research around the historical port city Galle in Sri Lanka is discussed. The main objective of the project is on the archaeological excavation and conservation of the Dutch East Indiaman Avondster, which was in service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) before it sank on July 2, 1659 in the bay of Galle. The excavation of the shipwreck was started in November 2001 and scheduled to continue till the year 2004. The project also focuses on Dutch-Sri Lankan cultural heritage in Galle, the training of Sri Lankan underwater archaeologists and conservators, and building of a museum to display the finds from the excavation.
