Abstract

The aggregation behavior was correlated for a number of different chromophores incorporated into amphiphilic structures to obtain a general picture of the relative importance of different factors that can control aggregation phenomena. Results indicate that both hydrophobic-hydrophilic and aromatic-aromatic interactions play major roles. In particular, squaraine studies suggest the balance between these interactions may be critical and can selectively altered by structural modifications. The results also suggest the likelihood of a relatively small 'unit' structure for the aggregate in most, if not all, cases.
