Silicone in the blood and capsule of women with breast implants

Abstract

The presence of silicone in the capsule and blood of women with breast implants is investigated. Eighteen capsules associated with breast implants are used and cut into sections and dried in a freezing drier for 24 hours. Sections are weighed using an electronic balance. Infrared spectroscopy is used to identify the existence of silicones in the extraction solution from the specific vibration bands of silicone. Results shows that women with breast implants have significantly higher Si levels in their blood and tissue than those normal humans.
