Sequential hypothesis-testing based freeway incident response decision-making system

    Abstract

    Existing ATMS algorithms treat incident detection and response separately, and do not explicitly take into account the tradeoffs between the expected losses associated with false alarms, undetected incidents and delayed responses to incidents. In this paper, we present a sequential hypothesis testing based freeway incident response decision making system which systematically considers the tradeoffs between the losses associated with delayed incident response and the improved decision-making capabilities that result from delaying action until additional measurements are taken.
