Self-focusing of laser pulses in magnetized relativistic electron beams

Abstract

It is shown that laser pulses can self-focus in magnetized relativistic electron beams under the Doppler shifted electron cyclotron resonance condition. We have numerically determined the threshold condition for self-focusing which is found to be governed by the electron beam density and the initial width of the laser beam rather than by the initial field amplitude of the laser beam.
