Abstract

Recent microelectronics developments have made practical the migration of the workstation approach of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) downward to the micro environment supported by 16- or 32-bit microprocessors. A 3-D Micro-CAD system, GRAFIX, based on Rational Parametric Cubics (RPC) and Bicubics has been developed. From its inception it has been designed as more than a drawing tool and offers geometric design features not found in most mini- or mainframe-CAD systems. This is a consequence of true 3-D database creation and mathematical algorithms which enable precise representation of geometries - an essential consideration when a CAD database is to serve as the interface between CAD and CAM. The paper presents the advantages of the RPC data structure as well as the unique geometric design features offered by GRAFIX.
