Results from the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC

    Abstract

    The first preliminary data from the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC from Au-Au collisions at SNN=130 GeV has been reported. ¿From 3 independent detectors we have obtained the pseudo-rapidity density for the most 0-6% central Au-Au collisions dN/dη of ≈ 530 with an systematic error of 10%. Particle ratios pions and kaons are close to unity at mid-rapidity. The ratio of antiprotons to protons is significantly below unity at mid-rapidity, and decrease at forward rapidity. The rapidity dependence serves as a strong indicator of the balance between stopping of projectile baryons and anti-baryon baryon production. The BRAHMS collaboration wishes to thank the C-AD department of BNL for successful commissioning of RHIC and the contributions to the construction of the experiment.
