Purification and modification of fullerene C60 in the undergraduate laboratory

Abstract

A new teaching laboratory in fullerene chemistry is presented in which undergraduate organic chemistry students are introduced to an emerging topic in chemistry, while incorporating fundamental experimental techniques required in the standard undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum. This fullerene laboratory is divided into two parts: the purification of C60 from fullerene-enriched soot and a subsequent 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of an azomethine ylide to the C60. Previously reported procedures are modified to allow for all experiments to be completed in two four-hour laboratory periods.
