Abstract

Recommended manufacturers' cycles, predominantly based on trial and error experience, are routinely used to cure graphite/epoxy prepregs. The authors have recently initiated a comprehensive research program at Polytechnic in the area of the fundamental studies of composites' processing. This complex, interdisciplinary problem is currently under active investigation at Polytechnic Institute of New York. Within the past year, the authors have assembled: 1. equipment capable of producing a 3-inch wide prepreg tape and 2. an autoclave simulator. This gives a unique capability among academic institutions in the US to exercise control over the entire manufacturing cycle of composites. In this paper, the authors shall report some instructive preliminary results.
