Abstract

OpenSky19: Editor's Preface

This volume contains the papers presented at the 7th OpenSky Workshop 2019, held on 21st-22nd November 2019, at Swisscom's WorkGym in Zurich, Switzerland.

Since its launch in 2013, the OpenSky Network has quickly evolved to a large-scale air traffic control data collection and sharing platform. With now more than 2 000 sensors operated by volunteers across the globe and more than 10 000 users, the OpenSky Network is today greatly contributing towards the vision of a more efficient, secure and reliable operation of the airspace by providing open accessibility of air-traffic control data to the public. The workshop is targeted at anyone interested in data-based aviation research and serves as a forum to discuss new ideas, the network itself, and research activities around the OpenSky Network. Participants are invited to actively contribute to the program by presenting their projects at the workshop. As in previous years, there have been many opportunities to get to know the community during the social activities around the workshop program. The workshop is attracting a diverse audience from research, authorities, and industry and - in its 2019 edition - has had 60 international participants.

Following the successful workshops in previous years, we are proud to present the first proceedings of the OpenSky Workshop. Following our call for submissions, the OpenSky Workshop 2019 received 21 abstract submissions for presentations. Each 2-page abstract submission received 2 reviews. The review committee consisted of 9 Program Committee (PC) members from industry (Eurocontrol, FLARM, Boeing, Skysquitter, SeRo Systems GmbH), academia (University of Oxford, Ruhr-University Bochum, University of Kaiserslautern, NYUAD), and organizations (armasuisse, OpenSky Network). The PC decided to accept 17 submissions that were invited to submit full papers (up to 12 pages). The final program consists of 15 papers and presentations, in addition to a special talk by Kathrin Hösli (Head of Exploration at Swisscom) and two demo presentations from MetSafe and Assaia International Ltd. Zurich.

We thank Matthias Schäfer from SeRo Systems GmbH for his service as web chair and Allan Tart from the OpenSky Network for his service as registration chair of the workshop. The workshop took place on the premises of Swisscom in Zurich.
