    Abstract

A single pile model test was conducted to study pile group response to seismically induced lateral spreading, with and without a mass above the ground. The strain gauges were used to measure the bending moments and axial forces imposed during lateral spreading. The tests indicate that the lateral pressure exerted by the shallow nonliquefiable soil layer controlled the bending moments and axial forces. The bending moments were found to be larger in the surrounded area of upper and lower soil interfaces. The superstructural inertia influenced bending moments at shallow depths and imposed greater tensile forces in the upslope piles of a pile group.
