Photoinitiation and hydrophobic cluster formation in poly(methacrylic acid)

Abstract

The possibility that the clusters formed in polymethacrylic acid (PMA) at low pH to act as cages for photochemically-produced radicals in water was investigated to enhance the radical recombination by retarding the diffusive motion separating the two radicals formed by the bond cleavage. If the photoinitiators attached to the PMA are hydrophobic, it was expected that the PMA to form pH-dependent cages about the radicals formed on irradiation, which would lead to recombination of the radicals produced on irradiation only in the pH range where the PMA could form the capsules.
