Periodic structures generated in a cloud of cold atoms

    Abstract

    A de Broglie wave interferometry technique was employed to generate and detect density gratings in an atomic cloud. Structures of period λ/2 and λ/4 were observed in a sample of ∼100-μK85Rb atoms. Higher-order structures were detected using a three-pulse echo technique. The data collected show good agreement with theory for a variety of experimental conditions and suggest a promising technique for on-line monitoring and control of atom lithography.
