Nuclear excitation in the reaction 207Pb(μ-, ν6n) 201Tl

    Abstract

    A probability of roughly 1% has been measured for the formation of the first excited state of 201Tl following muon capture on 207Pb. A probability of this magnitude for 6 neutron may indicate structure in the nuclear excitation function near 54 MeV. An alternative interpretation is provided by muon capture on a correlated np pair in analogy with pion absorption.
