Lossless Grayscale Image Coding by Using Higher Order Context Modeling and Bit-Plane Decomposition

    Abstract

    The technique for lossless grayscale image coding was described using higher order context modeling and bit-plane decomposition (BPD). In bit-plane decomposition, a k-bit grayscale image is decomposed into a set of k binary planes. The bit-plane encoding algorithms encode the bit-planes independently and uses large uniform areas in each plane to achieve high compression. The results demonstrated significant gains in performance over JPEG, regular arithematic coding, and high-order conditional entropy (HOCE)-BPD using two dimensional modeling.
