Inferential beliefs and order effects in personality impression formation

Abstract

Describes a study with 121 female undergraduates which investigated (a) the role of inferential beliefs in the impression formation process and (b) order effects. It was found that consideration of a S's inferential beliefs significantly increased prediction of the evaluative impression formed by Ss. 4 possible explanations of order effects were considered. Results tend to restrict further the discounting notion and are not supportive of an attention decrement, directed impression, or serial learning explanation.
