Abstract

Based on a systematic exploitation of administrative data available ever since the creation of the income tax in 1914, Thomas Piketty provides an original analysis of evolution of the income distribution in France during the 20th century and of the role played by the taxation of income. This book, in the straight tradition of the pioneering work undertaken fifty years ago by Simon Kuznets on the history of inequality in the United States, is discussed here by François Bourguignon and Gilles Postel-Vinay.
