Abstract

This paper presents numerical results for a bechmark problem in convective heat transfer formulated by the ASME for its 1992 Winter Annual Meeting. The organizers of the symposium chose the heat transfer over a two-dimensional backward-facing step under steady, laminar, incompressible, constant property flow conditions as the model problem. The present work reports on results obtained using a simultaneous variable solution technique based on second-order, finite difference approximations. The solution for the underlying hydrodynamic field is in very good agreement with the available experimental results. Results for the thermal field are presented for the specified conditions and physical parameters in terms of Nusselt number, temperature and bulk temperature distributions.
