Geometric Features of the Mixing of Passive Scalars at High Schmidt Numbers

Abstract

The advection and diffusion behaviors of passive scalars at high Schmidt numbers were studied. Numerical simulations of turbulent mixing were carried out for a range of Schmidt numbers. A homogeneously sheared flow, at a Taylor-microscale Reynolds number of 87, in which the scalar field of constant mean gradient was allowed to evolve according to the advection-diffusion equation was considered. The results show that mixing becomes isotropic with decreasing diffusivity.
