Flow of a non-Newtonian Bingham plastic through an axisymmetric sudden contraction: Effects of Reynolds and yield numbers

Abstract

The effect of the governing Reynolds and yield numbers on the steady, incompressible, laminar flow of a non-Newtonian viscoplastic Bingham fluid through an axisymmetric sudden contraction is studied numerically using a finite-differences based scheme. The results demonstrate the significant effect of these two parameters both on the macroscopic and local kinematic properties of the flow field. The existence of a yield stress results in the rapid decrease of the recirculating flow region, which practically disappears at very low yield numbers. The centerline velocity development in the immediate vicinity of the contraction is shown to be independent of the yield number.
