Exhausting students' potential in mathematics: A comprehensive approach to promoting both struggling and promising students

Abstract

During the years 2000-2010 we led a national project called Mitzui u-Metzuyanut in Mathematics (the meaning of which is "Exhausting Students' Mathematical Potential") that began as an experimental project in 56 middle schools and devel oped into a nation-wide mandatory program in every middle school in Israel. The project aimed at implementing a special program in mathematics for low-achieving students, hand in hand with a special program for high-achieving stu dents. The project's main goal was to enhance the mathematics learning opportu nities for middle school students (7th-9th grades) at both ends - both promising students who are mathematically capable and struggling students who are math ematically disadvantaged. Participating schools were required to implement the program in full - for both ends. The project was launched and supported by the Ministry of Education, and was conducted as a unique collaboration between the Ministry of Education and two academic institutes (The Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, and The Hebrew University in Jerusalem). In this chapter we describe the design and implementation of the project as well as its impact on students, teachers, and the school system.
