Effects of pressure on the first triplet state of anthracene

Abstract

An optical study of the first triplet state of anthracene single crystals has been made under hydrostatic pressure from 1 atm to 6.8 kbar. The (0,0) level undergoes a linear red shift with pressure of −11.8 cm−1/kbar. The Davydov splitting of this level is increased by 3.4±1.0 cm−1 in going from 1 atm to 5.4 kbar. This increase in the Davydov splitting is interpreted in terms of basic triplet interactions.
