Abstract

A variety of factors, including biological, psychological, and environmental have been associated with various adolescent risk-taking behaviors, but particularly with sexual risk-taking. One factor that has received increased attention in recent years as an important correlate of sexual risk-taking is the onset of mental difficulties, particularly depression during adolescence. In this chapter we provide a brief overview of depression, sexual risk-taking and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents, as well as explore the association between depression and sexual behaviors during the period of adolescence. We conclude with implications and recommendations for future studies and practice with adolescents. Such advances will ultimately improve the current medical and psychological services provided to at-risk adolescents.
