Cooperative growth mechanism of plate-like FCC crystals

Abstract

Some aspects of the cooperative growth mechanism of plate-like FCC crystals, as proposed by Ming and Sunagawa [J. Crystal Growth 87 (1988) 13], are discussed. It is unclear as to the circumstances under which such a mechanism would operate. Further, the mechanism for the alternating formation of macroscopic protrusions requires a corresponding reversal of relative growth rates of two surfaces for a constant supersaturation level, which is difficult to understand.
