Abstract

The cellulosic fraction of agricultural, forestry and municipal residues are discussed regarding their material and energy value. Acid hydrolysis is a potentially attractive technique for upgrading the value of cellulosic wastes by converting them to glucose. The glucose can then undergo biological processing for further conversion to ethanol. New York University has carried out extensive work on developing technology with emphasis on the step of converting the cellulose to glucose continuously.
