    Abstract

The author focuses on engineers as users of continuing education (CE) and evaluates existing knowledge about their participation in CE with respect to the following questions: 1) why do engineers participate (or do not participate) in CE? ; 2) how do the needs and motivation of engineers in relation to CE participation differ with career stages? ; 3) to what extent do engineers participate in different types of CE? ; 4) does participation in CE by engineers vary by level of education, career stage, field, size and location of firm or employer financial support? ; 5) what are the outcomes of CE participation, especially with respect to engineers' careers? The above questions are addressed by analyzing and evaluating existing data sources.
