Abstract

Methods for preparing conductive polymer/superconductor sandwich devices consisting of polypyrrole coated YBa2Cu3O7 -δ microbridges are described. Electrochemical procedures are utilized to alter the oxidation state of the polymer and, in doing so, it is found for the first time that superconductivity (i.e. Tc and Jc) can be modulated in a controllable and reproducible fashion by the polymer layer. Whereas neutral (insulating) polypyrrole only slightly influences the electrical properties of the underlying YBa2Cu3O7-δ film, the oxidized (conductive) polymer depresses Tc by 15K and Jc by 40%. Therefore a new type of conducting polymer switch for controlling superconductivity is demonstrated.
