Calcium sulfate/PLLA composites for bone regeneration

Abstract

The novel ways of making composites of calcium sulfate (CS) and PLLA and to characterize composite degradation in vitro were developed. Two types of composite pellets were produced and characterized. The pellets were coated with 10, 30 and 50 micron thick coatings of PLLA solution thereby gaining 3%, 10% and 17% in weight respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray microprobe analysis were also performed. CS/PLLA composite pellets underwent slower dissolution than pure CS pellets and the dissolution rate decreased as the fraction of PLLA increased in the composite pellets. The results of the SEM evaluation of the polymer coated CS (PCCS) pellets show thin and regular coatings surrounding the CS.
