Application of whispering gallery mode resonators in the development of smart materials

Abstract

Microsphere optical resonators have been used as molecular/biological sensors and, most recently, as mechanical sensors for measurement of stress, strain, temperature and hydrostatic pressure. In this paper, the whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical principle exploited in these microsphere sensors will be described and an overview of the mechanical sensing applications will be provided. These sensors can become an integral part of particle and fiber reinforced composites. They can be embedded on the surface or inside various composite materials and provide information on the stress, strain, temperature and variety of other parameters. Applications of such sensors for the structural health monitoring of composite materials are discussed.
