An empirical evaluation of the validity of the draw a family test

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

The validity of the Draw A Family Test (DAF) could not be established adequately. Several hypotheses were formulated, based on the interrelation of demographic characteristics with clinical interpretations of the DAF. Drawings were obtained from 239 subjects and scored for size, detail and number of figures. Some support for the validity of interpretations of the DAF was found; ethnicity was related to significant differences on the size variable, for specified subgroups family drawings were less frequently representative of actual family size, and the size and detail variables were highly correlated. Areas for further research were identified.
