A generic single-step synthesis of monodisperse core/shell colloids based on spontaneous pickering emulsification

Abstract

A novel single-step synthesis of monodisperse latex-based core-shell colloids, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) that completely relies on self-assembly of the components involved was reported. 5 ml of TPM (methacryloxy- propyltrimethoxysilane) and 2 ml of MM (methylmethacrylate) were mixed to a water based ferrofluid consisting in 12 nm Fe3O4 particles prepared. Ludox dispersion was diluted with 20 ml of demi-water and then mixed with 1 ml of TPM and 100 μL of MM. The average silica particles diameter was determined by dynamic light scattering. Both core polymerization and shell growth occurs simultaneously upon addition of a radical initiator. No influence of the particle shape and polydispersity with respect to the emulsion formation magnetite and cobalt ferrite dispersions showed polydispersity up to 30%. This synthesis does not require coupling agents or surfactants and only employs thermodynamically stable.
